What is Patient Advice and Liaison (PALS)?

The Patient Advice and Liaison Service is here to help you. The NHS Plan aims to ensure that all NHS services put patients at the heart of everything they do. Patient Advice and Liaison Services are set up in every NHS Trust to support the on-going development of patient focused care.

Understanding the patient experience is key to providing high quality services and so patients, carers and families are encouraged to contact PALS to give feedback about the services that they have received.

The service is confidential, the information is used anonymously to identify trends in services, highlight good practice and also to identify where improvements to services are needed.

Problem Solving

  • By providing on the spot advice and support

  • Aim to resolve any problems at an early stage

Information

  • Providing information about other sources of help/support

  • Informing of complaints procedure and Independent Complaints Advocacy Service (ICAS)

Public Involvement

  • Listening to patients concerns, suggestions and queries

  • Promoting communication and networks with local communities

Service Improvement

  • Acting as a catalyst for change in service design and delivery

  • Identifying strengths, weaknesses and gaps in provision

  • Supporting/training staff to deal with comments/feedback

  • Ensuring procedures are integrated into clinical governance/quality framework

  • Providing information on trends and public concerns

Organisational Change

  • Promoting PALS approach throughout the organisation

  • Promoting patients' interests within the Trust - fostering a more responsive culture.
