Welcome to
NHS Swindon
HEALTH professionals in Swindon are urging women between the ages of
25 – 64 to take advantage of free smear tests being offered to
them.
Cervical screening saves around 4500 lives every year in England and
about 18 lives every year in Swindon. Since the screening programme was
introduced, there has been a 36 per cent decline in deaths caused by
cervical cancer.
Cervical cancer can develop from an infection of a
common virus known as human papillomavirus (HPV), which has a number of
different strains. HPV can be acquired by any woman that has been
sexually active and the immune system can usually fight off most strains
of the infection. Occasionally however, HPV can lead to the development
of abnormal cells which over time may become cancerous if left
untreated.
Routine screening starts at the age of 25 . Women
between the ages of 25 – 49 will receive a letter every three years from
the Cervical Screening Programme team, inviting them to come for a
smear. Women between the ages of 50 – 64 will be invited for a
test every 5 years.

Swine flu vaccination programme
Phase two of the vaccination programme has now started - the
second phase of vaccination distribution will be offered to: •
Children six months and over and under five years old
• Carers for elderly or disabled persons whose welfare may be at risk if
their carer falls ill. These groups have been identified, as young
children are particularly vulnerable to serious illness from flu. Carers
have considerable responsibility in looking after vulnerable people.
